Please welcome my guest Michale Hess
Where are you from?
I am from a small community, Columbus, Kansas, I have considered Treece, Kansas as my hometown, but now I can’t go there. Too many sink holes from the silver mines. Now I live in Ozark, Alabama, my hubby retired from the Army and we settled here. I live on a quiet street, but do have a four-lane highway behind the house.
A little about yourself:
I am the only daughter with a boy’s name, Michale. I do have three younger brothers, I use to call them, Mary, Lulu and Beth because I thought it will be fair if they have a girl’s name, they really do not have girls name.
I am the oldest, so I have more chores than the boys but during summer time, they have to mowed the yard (five acres). So that was fair.
My hobbies are cross stitching, writing (of course), playing online games, meeting new people.
I went to college for two years, but my health issues cause me to drop out. My major was Accounting. I did really good in college, my grade average was 3.55, I was impressed with my accomplishments in college.
I am married to a wonderful man (31 years) and we have two children and five grandchildren.
We have our ups and downs, we make through the rough times and learn more about ourselves. We use to have a cute saying:
Not kid a kid till the kid can kid you. I know stupid but it was funny at the time.
Tell us your latest news?
I am working on a screen script. It is something I hope to finish and filmed. It is a little a bit about me.
When and why did you begin writing?
I was in fifth grade, my teacher Mrs. Townsend thought I had an unusual flair of telling stories, she had encouraged me to write them down. My mom kept the stories, till the house fire, which destroys everything that was in the house.
It was three years ago, that I really started to write again, after I found out I had colon cancer. I knew then I have to write, it was my grandfather, Walter Trimble wishes that I write. He told me that I have stories inside me that needs to get out. I feel he is sending me the stories for they come to me in my dreams. My first novel: The Powers Twins in the Four Element Race is the first novel I have completed. Now, I am rewriting it. This is going to be either a seven or eight book series. The last book will be called Live or Die.
When had you first considered yourself a writer?
After the first paragraph of the Powers Twins novel through the last paragraph. When I finish the last paragraph:
Mary clapped her hands above her head. A red gold glow surrounded her; she metamorphosed into the phoenix. Mary looked around and glanced over to Arabella who also had transformed into a phoenix. Mary spread her wings and flew out the window. Mary flew around the castle, stretching her wings. She landed on the roof and looked around the area. Villagers are getting ready for bed. Lights were going off seems like one at a time. Mary flew towards the ocean; two owls flew along with her. She flew around the village and the castle. The sun was peeking at the horizon. Mary and the owls decided to go back to the castle and watched the sunrise.
Before she changed back, she wished her parents were there with her and Chadwick. This year had been eventful for Mary. Mary flew one more time around the school before she changed back.
She sings the Phoenix song of happiness. Arabella heard the song, she knew. Mary was free, finally free!
This was when I considered myself a writer. I got chills when I wrote the last sentence.
What inspired you to write your first book?
My dream. Let me explain. I keep having these dreams about these twins, their parents vanished on the night they were born, and a seven hundred year old snake is after them. They grew up separated by their uncles (father’s brothers) and their aunts (their mother’s sisters). The twin’s names are: Mary Arabella Molly Jane and Chadwick Allen James Sedgrick Powers. Mary is more powerful than Chadwick but Chadwick is quick doing potions. But together, they have powers that neither of them expected. Along the way, they met at school for the first time. Mary’s friends are Rose Thunderleaf and Becky Podder and Chadwick friends are Henry Clearwind and Bradley Winters.
Do you have a specific writing style?
I don’t know if I have a certain writing style. I just write.
How did you come up with the title?
The title and characters come to me.
Is there a message in your novel that you want readers to grasp?
Love can overcome anything. Having fun in life is worth living.
How much of the book is realistic?
It is a fantasy story, there is not realistic in it. But love of each other is in there. How teamwork can get things done.
Are experiences based on someone you know, or events in your own life, or are they a figment of your imagination? (i.e. – is your hero/heroin you? – is your ‘bad guy’ you or someone you know?)
This is purely imagination. The bad guy is all the bullies in my life. Mary and Chadwick are strong and I wanted to be that strong.
What books have influenced your life the most?
I love to read Young Adults. When I was younger, we didn’t have the books that are out there now, like Harry Potter, Twilight saga, Hunger Games sagas, to mention some.
If you had to choose, which writer would you consider a mentor?
What book(s) are you reading now?
Right now, I am reading a book called Lexi’s Run by Ellison James.
Are there any new authors that have grasped your interest?
Not right now.
What are your current projects?
The Power Twins series, Fred and Bud series (children’s book) I working on Going Against Time. ( My screen script)
Name one entity that you feel supported you outside of family members.
I go to a writers’ meeting in Dothan, Alabama. They are good at tearing your story and help you bring it back as a better story. I love it! I love them for doing it. They told me that I must have a tough skin because Going Against Time, they tore it, matter of fact, they ripped it apart. I learn and applied what I have learned in my story. It made the story stronger instead of weaker. It is now fast paced and I can now lure you into it. I am writing it as a book form then I am going to write it as a script.
If you could pick any celebrity to star in the movie version of your book, who would it be?
I would like Emma Watson to play Arabella Jane Williams Powers. Arabella is the founder of Cambridge School of the Gifted Wizards and Witches. There is a big picture of Arabella, and she talks to Mary.
If you had to do it all over again, would you change anything in your latest book?
I am currently working on Fred and Bud meets Mr. Snappy Snappers the Snapping Turtle. And the Powers Twins in the Four Element Race, I am rewriting some of the chapters, some saying it is to much like Harry Potter.
Can you share a little of your current work with us?
Chita popped into Mary’s room, she walked over to her daughter, who was asleep. Chita glanced at Mary. She placed her hand on Mary’s cheek.
“My sweet daughter, Mary, I might not get to see you grow up to be a fine young lady. I want to give you something. I want to give you some of my powers. Mary, you must be strong and brave. My sweet Mary. Momma loves you and so does your daddy.” Chita whispered, as a tear slid down her cheek and on to Mary. Chita smiled at her daughter. She gently lifted up Mary’s small hands and kissed each one. Chita vanished out of the room.
“My precious son, Chadwick, I might not get to see you grow up to be a fine young man. I want to give you something. I want to give you some of my powers. Chadwick, you must be strong and brave. My sweet Chadwick. Momma loves you and so does your daddy.” Chita whispered, as a tear slid down her cheek and onto Chadwick. Chita smiled at her son. She gently lifted up Chadwick’s small hands and kissed each one. Chita vanished out of the room.
This is in the first chapter that has two different parts.
Is there anything you find particularly challenging in your writing?
Finding a quiet time to write.
What is your particular writing quirk?
People using there for their. Or our for are. It makes me so upset. A lot of writers are doing it, I don’t know if they notice it or not. I tried not to misuse the words.
Do you have to travel much concerning your book(s)?
No, since they are fictional, I use the memories of my home town.
I did go down the Dragon’s Tail trail. It was awesome and I am going to use that in one of my Powers Twins stories. Chadwick would turn against his sister in the Dragon’s Tail. He will be under the influence of Robert Lee Craft aka Pybus, the seven hundred old, that can turn himself into a snake.
Who designed the cover(s)?
JL Stratton, a very good friend and a fellow writer. He charges me nothing for my novel: Heart to Heart. I am editing right now. I can’t wait to get that out into the readers’ hands.
What was the hardest part of writing your book?
Keep on track. Not letting the character take charge. Believe me, they tried. I have more story ideas coming to me. Another story series came to me: Rossa Rainbowleaf (like, I said, they come to me and introduced themselves and tells me their stories. In my dreams) .
Did you learn anything from writing your book and what was it?
That I have the most patience when I write. And I am finding myself when I write.
Do you have any advice for other writers?
Keep writing. Don’t let the fear of writing keeps you from writing. I heard that from somewhere. I don’t know who said.
Do you have anything specific that you want to say to your readers?
I hope you enjoy reading the stories as much as I enjoy writing them. I hope I sweep you into a world that my characters live in.
